If the condition evaluates to true, the CASE expression will return the corresponding result set for that condition and stop evaluating the next expression. The CASE expression evaluates a list of conditions in sequence. One thing I love about PostgreSQL that you miss with closed-source and even with other open source projects, is that when you are curious about a new feature > Function Scan on pg_catalog.generate_series i (cost=0.00.10.00 rows=1000 width=0) Good old backwards compatible way: SELECT count(*)įROM (SELECT CASE i WHEN 1 THEN 'First' ELSE 'Not First' ENDįROM generate_series(1,10000000) AS i) AS f Aggregate (cost=12.50.12.51 rows=1 width=8) Output: CASE (generate_series(1, 10000000)) WHEN 1 THEN 'First'::text ELSE 'Not First'::text END Uses this new thing called a ProjectSet executor and takes ~1 second Aggregate (cost=32.52.32.53 rows=1 width=8) (actual time=1036.048.1036.048 rows=1 loops=1) Here is a quick test I did to compare the results and timing:įROM (SELECT CASE generate_series(1,10000000) WHEN 1 THEN 'First' ELSE 'Not First' END) AS f It should be noted though that, the new approach if you wanted to do something kinda crazy like that does seem to be faster than the standard approach. But that's still beingĭiscussed, and the code would reside in places not touched here, so that's Likely to instead prohibit SRFs in those places. I've seen students make awesome looking roller coasters, but because of a lack of testing, it fails right at the start. Remember, momentum is the force that keep the marble going in the direction it's currently moving. Sudden turns or drops that do not account for the marble's momentum may result in the marble flying off of the track. Start the coaster high and test regularly. I often see students wistfully creating awesome-looking features that don't work because they do not account for how much energy the marble has. Marbles have a limited amount of energy, so encourage the students to plan their roller coaster according to how much energy the marble has. Remind the students that the tape needs to be smoothly applied. Encourage experimentation and you'll be amazed with the ingenious ideas that arise in your class!Īfter I show my students the basics of how to construct the roller coaster, I end my lecture with the 4 big mistakes that I see people make: These are the most common roller coaster elements, but I've also seen funnels made of newspaper, jumps, tunnels, corkscrews, helixes, double and triple loops, suspended tracks, and configurations that don't have a name. In the photo with the upside-down loop, you can also see how to secure track alongside a wall by using a long piece of tape. Upside-down loops are created by taping a piece of track upside-down onto the end of a track, then curving the upside-down piece so that it becomes right-side up. If the hill is too small and the marble is travelling too fast, the marble's momentum will carry it up the hill and then continue it's trajectory off the track. This is another good opportunity to illustrate the negative effects of momentum. Hills can be made by securing the track to a flat surface, then lifting the middle of the track up and securing the other end. Centripetal force is like momentum: it's when an object wants to keep moving forward, except that it's forced into a circular path. You can explain that loops work because of centripetal force. Loops can be created by securing the track to a flat surface, then bending the track upside down and securing the other end. Now for the fun stuff! A roller coaster that just goes in a straight line can be fun, but I find it much more satisfying to include exciting elements. Students will also have an unstructured opportunity to hone teambuilding skills as they communicate with their peers during roller coaster construction.Through a cycle of building, testing, observing and revision, students will gain an experiential understanding of fundamental physics concepts and the basics of successful roller coaster construction.Students will apply their understanding of those concepts as they construct and text their roller coaster.Students will comprehend basic physics concepts that are applicable to roller coaster construction, including potential energy, kinetic energy, and momentum.Encourage students to work in groups of 3-5 people. There are different but related concepts - help students use them correctly. Briefly define momentum (a force that keeps something moving in the direction it's already going in), speed (how fast an object is moving), and energy (how much force an object has because it is moving).Show students the construction techniques from steps 3-6 in 5 minutes or less.Demonstrate how the marble can roll in the track.Identify the two parts: the foam tubing (roller coaster track) and marbles. Then have everyone gently take apart only their own roller coaster and clump all the used tape into a giant tape ball Prep: Arrange plenty of space in your roomĬleanup: Allow 2 minutes near end of class for students to try each others coasters. Here's a brief clip from some in-class footage that I took during one of my classes: You can find the lesson plan, 1-page project sheet, and more project ideas at I'd like to note that the concept for this project is not my own, but the building and teaching techniques are. This project reaches a wide span of grade ranges, from K-12. It's an open-ended, fast-paced, constantly evolving, and easy to explain. That's the response I get from students who've taken my engineering classes before when they find out it's marble roller coaster day. "We're doing the roller coasters?! Yes!!"
There are more ways things can go wrong than right. Importantly, entropy is a state function, like temperature or pressure, as opposed to a path function, like heat or work. the entropy of a random variable is the average level of information, surprise, or uncertainty inherent to the variable’s possible outcomes. Entropy is a measure of how dispersed and random the energy and mass of a system are distributed. The magnitude of the increase is greater than the magnitude of the decrease, so the overall entropy change for the formation of an NaCl solution is positive. Entropy provides a good explanation for why Murphy’s Law seems to pop up so frequently in life. More specifically, we can define it as: Entropy is a scientific concept as well as a measurable physical property that is most commonly associated with a state of disorder. Each hydrated ion, however, forms an ordered arrangement with water molecules, which decreases the entropy of the system. Send us feedback about these examples.\): The Effect of Solution Formation on Entropyĭissolving NaCl in water results in an increase in the entropy of the system. These examples are programmatically compiled from various online sources to illustrate current usage of the word 'entropy.' Any opinions expressed in the examples do not represent those of Merriam-Webster or its editors. Sebastian Smee, Washington Post, After seven years in the Hammerskins, exhaustion and entropy were setting in. Even though thermodynamics itself does not describe processes as a function of time, the second law defines a unique direction of time (times arrow) as the direction in which total entropy increases. Further confusions are produced by some attempts to generalize entropy with similar but not the same concepts in other disciplines. mo.dynamics implies the principle that the total entropy, which is a measure of disorder, must increase steadily. The book’s subtitle is: What we know and what we do not know. 2022 Succumbing to something closer to entropy than evolution, the watercolor starts to puddle and bruise. Entropy is the most used and often abused concept in science, but also in philosophy and society. In 2015, I wrote a book with the same title as this article. Ahmed Almheiri, Scientific American, 17 Aug. 2021 This is the island formula for the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation. Conor Feehly, Discover Magazine, 3 Nov. We have a closed system if no energy from an outside source can enter the system. In science, entropy is used to determine the amount of disorder in a closed system. James Riordon, Scientific American, In short, the tendency for systems to move from low entropy to high entropy, the particular spacetime conditions of our solar system and the indeterminacy of the future combine to create our particular conception of time. Entropy is a measure of the amount of energy that is unavailable to do work in a closed system. James Riordon, Scientific American, The expansion allows the universe to smooth out, dissipating the entropy before collapsing again. Quanta Magazine, That flaw is entropy, which builds up as a universe bounces. 2022 If the entropy of the system decreases, the entropy of the environment must increase such that the sum of the two entropies can only increase or stay the same, but never decrease. Jennifer Ouellette, Ars Technica, 2 Dec. Recent Examples on the Web Jacob Bekenstein realized in 1974 that black holes also have entropy. Export as PNG and move on, I say, but ymmv. I put markerlines on this gradiant at 25, 50 and 75. Performance issues include work slowdowns, freezing and even crashing. After this I created a new image, used solely to create a rectangle and gave this rectangle the desired gradiant. Creating an opacity mask with Inkscape is simply a matter of placing a black and white object (like a rectangle) over your group of objects, and then applying. I made new nodes at Punt A, at the right end of Cirkel B, at the left end of Cirkel A and at punt B. Once applied, nothing will visibly change on your screen. To do this, select all of your objects and navigate to Object > Compound Path > Make. Preferences? Document Preferences? Vague section headers, like “behavior”? Nah. Creating an opacity mask with Inkscape will allow you to give groups of objects partial transparency in a gradient-like style, which is what I’ll be demonstrating in today’s tutorial. In order to make Illustrator apply a single gradient across multiple objects, as if it were a single object, you’ll have to make them into a compound path first. Besides, the preferences dialog is a pain to navigate in Inkscape. I doubt this would cause it, but I’m just not going to modify it. I personally find 96 dpi to be insufficient – it is visibly jagged – but if it works for your project, have at it… it all depends on your needs.ġ Given that DPI in SVGs can cause major scaling issues with the GFUI, I tend to avoid anything that messes with it. So, like I said, if resolution is important, exporting pngs has some benefits over the simple raster copy. This can be essential to getting a pure white-to-black gradient using curves. PNG exporting has a much more robust set of options and serves as a way for me to keep an archived copy of the raster, something that works well for my workflow I can now use Gimp to modify it freely before pulling it back into the SVG, should I need to. Messing with default DPI is a bit more than I want to do 1 to simply export the png. Course materials have been updated for Inkscape version 1.3. Click and Drag to Create the Gradient Line. To simulate the curvature Im using two adjacent paths with linear gradients facing opposite direction, like a bilinear gradient. Linear and Radial Gradients (1.2 Update). Activate the Create and Edit Gradients Tool (G) Select the Gradient Type. As long as you set the bitmap copy resolution In Inkscape Im creating a 3D cube like shape with some curvature along the border edges. Wherever I turn in the Apple world, my freedom is being diminished. I can't use the App Store with 1Password the way I do other web sites because it's not a web page, it's a separate program. And I have to sign into the App Store every time. I'm not going to address the larger problem of how developers are treated. There are problems with functionality programs downloaded from the developer are sometimes better than the App Store versions. I don't need the App store to take over a simple task. I dislike the App store installing programs on my computer. I use tabs all the time in Firefox, but of course you can't do that on the App store, forcing you to do a lot of back and forth. They are poorly organized and poorly described. It's as though after Steve Jobs died, his psychotic characteristics remained in the company, but none of the good ones. Private property and the ability to repair your own products are next in line. I'm plenty unhappy about the existing ways Apple keeps me tethered to the mothership and fiddles with my computer without my knowledge. There are many reasons to avoid the App store. It's just as convenient for me go to MacUpdate or PureMac or a developer's web site. Since it’s quite a steep price for a calendar app, you can download a trial version through Fantastical’s website to see if it’s worth the money.
